Water Damage Guide

What to Do After Water Damage

Water damage is stressful, but the first steps are straightforward: protect people, stop the source if it is safe, keep clear of electrical or sewage hazards, document what you can, and get the wet area assessed.

Water spreading through the property?

Stop the source only if it is safe. Keep clear of electrical or sewage hazards, then call to discuss the affected area.

1. Protect people first

Do not enter standing water if electrical equipment, outlets or wiring may be energized. Keep children and pets away from sewage or unknown contaminated water.

2. Stop the source when safe

Shut off a fixture, appliance or water supply only if you know how to do it safely. If the source is a broken municipal line or sewer issue, the utility may need to respond.

3. Document visible damage

Take photos or video of affected rooms and the apparent source before moving or discarding items when practical and safe.

4. Remove water and start drying

Standing water usually needs to be removed before the remaining moisture in materials can be dried effectively.

5. Check beyond the visible wet area

Water can travel under flooring and into walls, cabinets and lower levels. Surface dryness is not enough to confirm that the assembly is dry.
